The History of Walton Heath Manor

The property began life in 1917 when it was built for Sir Harry Greer MP, former MP for Clapham and Wells. He later became chairman of Baird Television, which began making pioneering television transmissions from its Crystal Palace studios in 1934, with the broadcast images seen several miles away.

The next owner was financier Sir Henry Strakosch, who was credited with saving his close friend Sir Winston Churchill from bankruptcy. Sir Winston was a regular house guest at Walton Heath Manor up until Sir Henry died in 1943. Apparently his drinking habits were abhorred by Sir Henry’s wife, so much so that she contested the bequest of £20,000 to Sir Winston in her husband’s will.

In 1990, Walton Heath Manor was fully restored and sympathetically refurbished, retaining architectural features including large, open fireplaces, beamed ceilings, stained glass windows and oak panelling.

Owners of Walton Heath Manor

The care home is owned by Hamilton House Medical, a specialist in residential care for the elderly. David Edmondson, the company’s managing director, takes a close interest in the home and the way it is run and visits on a weekly basis.

His active involvement means that he knows every member of our staff and he also seeks to meet and get to know every resident and their family.
